Eddie's father gave out the discipline, and Eddie's mother gave out the tenderness and love. This can relate to society today because men are often looked at as the ones who do all the work and make time for the kids when it is good for them. Women are often looked at as the ones who should stay home and take care of the kids. Therefore this relates because Eddie is saying how this was the case in his life. His mom took care of him and his brother, and his dad worked and drank; spending small amounts of time with Eddie.

"All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped." This connects to life today because parents damage their children throughout their whole childhood; from the younger years to teenage years. Some parents damage them emotionally, while other parents damage them physically. The damage inflicted on children by their parents is always present. It is an unavoidable factor in all children's lives.
